Employability Skills IV: Green jobs and their importance

Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. A solar panel fitter and a waste recycler both earn a salary. But their work also protects the Earth. Can a job really do both? Yes, and such a job is called a green job. Today we will learn what green jobs are, where they are found, and why they matter so much.

Let us first learn four simple words. Environment means everything around us, like air, water, soil, plants and animals. Pollution means dirt or harmful gases that spoil air, water or soil. Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, trap heat and make the Earth warmer. That warming changes rain and weather, and we call it climate change.

Now the main term. A green job is decent work that helps protect or restore the environment. Decent work means fair pay, safe conditions and respect for the worker. A green job cuts the use of energy, water and raw materials. It also reduces pollution, waste and greenhouse gases.

Let us compare two jobs doing the same kind of work. A diesel generator operator burns fuel and releases smoke, while a solar technician makes clean power from sunlight. Burning crop stubble pollutes the air, but a farmer who composts turns waste into manure. Throwing garbage in an open dump harms soil, but a recycler sorts it and reuses it.

Green jobs are found in almost every sector, so let us see them one by one. In agriculture, organic farmers use natural manure instead of harmful chemicals. In transport, electric vehicle mechanics and metro workers help cut smoke from roads. In water conservation, rainwater harvesting workers save water for dry months. In renewable energy, solar and wind technicians produce power that never runs out.

Here are four more sectors. In eco-tourism, a nature guide shows forests and wildlife while protecting them. In green construction, builders use less energy, natural light and recycled material. In solid waste management, workers collect, sort and recycle garbage. Appropriate technology means simple local tools, like a solar dryer, that suit village needs.

Students of computers can do green jobs too. Smart meters and apps help homes and factories track and cut electricity use. Sensors and AI can forecast weather and help farmers use water wisely. Data centres can run on renewable energy and cool servers efficiently. Even choosing email over printouts and repairing old devices reduces e-waste, which means thrown-away electronics.

Now the second big idea, the importance of green jobs. First, green jobs raise the efficiency of energy and raw materials, so we get more work from less. Second, they limit greenhouse gas emissions, which slows climate change. Third, they reduce waste and pollution in our air, water and soil. Fourth, they protect and restore ecosystems, which are living communities like forests, rivers and wetlands.

Green jobs help people too. They help communities adapt to climate change, for example by building flood-safe homes and saving water for droughts. They create new employment, especially in villages and small towns. They offer decent work with safety and fair wages. They also improve public health, because cleaner air and water mean fewer illnesses.

Let us follow one green job from start to end, a waste recycling unit. It begins with collecting dry waste from homes. Workers then sort it into plastic, paper and metal. The sorted material is cleaned and processed. Finally, it is made into new products and sold, so waste earns money.

India is creating many green jobs through national programmes. The Skill Council for Green Jobs trains young people for green careers. Rooftop solar schemes, like PM Surya Ghar, need trained installers in every city. The Swachh Bharat Mission needs waste managers and recyclers. Electric vehicles need new mechanics and charging station staff.

You do not have to wait for a green job title to act green. At work, switch off lights and computers when not in use. Print only when needed and use both sides of the paper. Give old phones and laptops to authorised e-waste collectors. Suggest one green idea in your school or office every month.

Pause the video and decide which of these are green jobs. A worker who repairs old mobile phones is doing a green job, because repair cuts e-waste. A factory worker who dumps chemicals into a river is not, because it harms an ecosystem. A solar panel cleaner is doing a green job, because clean panels make more clean power. An underpaid worker in an unsafe recycling unit is not fully green. A green job must also be decent work.
