The full lesson, in text

Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Every second, Indians make thousands of UPI payments. Can one laptop and an Excel sheet handle all that data? No, and that is why we need big data. Today we will learn what makes data big, its types, the Vs of big data, and its advantages and disadvantages.

Big data is a collection of data so huge and complex that ordinary tools cannot store or process it. First, it is too large for one normal computer or a simple spreadsheet. Second, it arrives very fast, often every second. Third, it comes in many forms, like text, photos, videos and sensor readings. So it needs many computers working together, which is called distributed computing.

Let us see big data in daily Indian life. UPI records every payment, and India now makes billions of UPI transactions each month. YouTube receives many hours of new video every single minute, along with views and comments. IRCTC handles lakhs of train ticket bookings every day. Smart electricity meters send a reading every few minutes from millions of homes.

Big data is of three types. Structured data is arranged in fixed rows and columns, like a table of student marks, so it is easy to search. Semi-structured data has some labels or tags but no fixed table, like JSON files or emails with a sender, a date and free text. Unstructured data has no fixed format at all, like photos, videos, voice notes and social media posts.

Pause and predict the type of each item. A WhatsApp voice note has no rows or tags, so it is unstructured. An Excel sheet of attendance has fixed rows and columns, so it is structured. A web page has HTML tags but free text inside, so it is semi-structured. Most big data in the world today is unstructured.

Big data is described by its Vs, and exams often ask for them. Volume means the amount of data, which can run into terabytes and more. Velocity means the speed at which new data arrives, like payments every second. Variety means the many forms of data, such as text, photos and videos. Veracity means how accurate and trustworthy the data is, since fake reviews or errors reduce it. Value means the useful benefit we can get from the data, like catching fraud.

Some textbooks add more Vs, so do not be confused. Variability means the data's meaning or its flow keeps changing, like festival sales that jump suddenly. Visualization means presenting results as charts and dashboards that people can understand. In exams, first write the five core Vs, then add these if the question asks for more.

To feel the volume, recall the units of data size. One kilobyte is one thousand twenty four bytes, enough for a short text. One megabyte is one thousand twenty four kilobytes, about one phone photo. One gigabyte is one thousand twenty four megabytes, roughly one movie. One terabyte is one thousand twenty four gigabytes, about two hundred fifty movies. One petabyte is one thousand twenty four terabytes, the scale where many big data systems work.

Now let us look at the advantages of big data. It helps organisations make better decisions based on facts rather than guesses. It helps companies understand customers and give personal offers, like shopping apps suggesting products. It detects fraud and faults early, like a bank blocking a strange payment. It also improves public services, such as traffic control in smart cities and planning in hospitals.

Big data also has disadvantages. The biggest is privacy, because personal data can be misused or leaked. Storing and processing it needs costly hardware, cloud services and skilled experts. If the data is poor in quality, the results will also be wrong, which we call garbage in, garbage out. Huge databases are also attractive targets for hackers, so security is a constant challenge.

In India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023 protects people's personal data. Under it, organisations must take clear consent before collecting personal data. They must use it only for the purpose they stated, and keep it safe. So big data must always be used together with responsibility.

Let us revise what we learned today. Big data is too large, too fast or too varied for normal tools. Its three types are structured, semi-structured and unstructured. Its five core Vs are volume, velocity, variety, veracity and value. Its advantages include better decisions, fraud detection and better services. Its disadvantages include privacy risk, high cost, poor quality data and security threats.
