Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. A textbook page only has words and pictures. A YouTube lesson has a voice, moving images and music too. Why do we remember the video better? Today we will learn what multimedia is, its five components, and where it is used.

Let us break the word into two parts. Multi means many. Media is the plural of medium, which means a way to share information, like text or sound. So multimedia means using many media together to share information. Today it is usually created, shown and controlled with a computer or a phone.

Multimedia has five main components. Text is written words, like headings and captions. Graphics are still pictures, like photos, drawings and charts. Audio is any sound, like a voice or music. Video is a series of real recorded pictures, usually with sound. Animation is drawn pictures made to move, like a moving diagram of the heart.

Let us study each component, starting with text. Text is the most basic component of multimedia. We see it in headings, labels, menus and subtitles. Its look can change with the font, size, colour and style. Text also takes very little storage space compared with the other components.

Next come graphics. Graphics are still pictures that do not move. Photos, drawings, charts, maps and icons are all graphics. A map of India explains the location of states faster than a paragraph. Common graphic file formats are JPEG, PNG, GIF and BMP.

Audio means any sound in a multimedia work. It can be speech, music or sound effects, like a school bell. Audio adds feeling, and it explains without making the user read. It is usually recorded with a microphone. Common audio formats are MP3 and WAV.

Video is a series of still pictures shown very quickly. Each still picture is called a frame. Usually about twenty four to thirty frames are shown every second, so our eyes see smooth motion. Video captures real events, like a science experiment, with motion and sound. Common formats are MP4 and AVI, and video files are usually the largest.

The last component is animation. Animation is also moving pictures, but the pictures are drawn or made on a computer. It can show things a camera cannot record. For example, blood flowing inside the heart, or planets moving around the Sun. Two D animation is flat, like a cartoon, while three D animation shows depth, like animated films.

Pause and predict. A doctor records a real surgery with a camera for medical students. A teacher shows a cartoon of electrons moving around an atom. Which is video, and which is animation? The surgery is video, because it is recorded from real life. The atom is animation, because the pictures are made, not recorded.

Multimedia is of two types, based on how the user moves through it. In linear multimedia, the content plays from start to end, and the user cannot change the path, like a film in a cinema hall. In non-linear multimedia, the user chooses what to see next, like clicking links on a website or playing a game.

When the user can control multimedia, we call it interactive multimedia. The user gives input, and the content responds. It uses buttons, menus, links and quizzes. When multimedia items are linked to one another, like on a web page, we call it hypermedia. Interaction keeps learners active, instead of only watching.

Multimedia is used almost everywhere. In education, it powers video lessons and e-learning apps. In entertainment, we see it in films and games. Businesses use it for advertisements and presentations. In medicine, doctors train with videos and three D models. Railway stations and airports use multimedia displays to share train and flight information.

To create and play multimedia, a computer needs suitable hardware. Input devices like a microphone, camera and scanner capture content. Output devices like a monitor, speakers, headphones and projector present it. Large storage, like a hard disk, SSD, pen drive or cloud storage, holds big files. A fast CPU, enough RAM and a graphics card make editing and playback smooth.

Multimedia has clear advantages and some limits. It makes ideas easy to understand, but its files are large and need storage. It holds the attention of users, but it costs time and tools to create. It reaches learners who prefer seeing or listening, but it needs good devices and often a good internet connection.

Let us revise what we learned today. Multimedia means using many media together. Its five components are text, graphics, audio, video and animation. Video is recorded from real life, while animation is made. Linear multimedia plays in order, and non-linear lets the user choose. It is used in education, business, medicine and entertainment.
