Features and tools of Synfig

Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Can you make a cartoon without drawing every single picture by hand? Yes, with Synfig Studio. Today we will learn what Synfig is, its main features, and the tools in its toolbox.

Synfig Studio is a software for making 2D animation. 2D means flat pictures with only width and height, like a cartoon. It is free and open source, which means anyone can download it, use it and study its code. It runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. You can download it from its official website, synfig dot org.

Synfig draws with vector graphics. A vector picture is stored as points, lines and curves, not as tiny dots. A raster picture, like a photo, is made of tiny dots called pixels. So a vector shape stays sharp even when you make it very large. It also keeps the file small.

Now the main features of Synfig. Tweening means Synfig draws the in-between frames for you, so you do not draw every frame. A layer is like a transparent sheet, and each object can sit on its own layer. Bones let you move a character's arm or leg like a skeleton. Synfig also has gradients, blur and other filters, and you can add sound. Finally, you can render, which means export, the animation as a video, a GIF or pictures.

When Synfig opens, you see several windows, called panels. The canvas in the middle is where you draw and watch the animation. The toolbox holds all drawing tools. The Params panel shows the settings, called parameters, of the selected object, like colour or size. The Layers panel lists every layer. The Timetrack panel shows changes over time. The Keyframes panel lists the important moments of the animation.

Let us see the tools, group by group, starting with selecting and moving. The Transform tool selects and moves objects and their points. The Smooth Move tool bends a group of points smoothly. The Scale tool makes an object bigger or smaller. The Rotate tool turns it around a centre point. The Mirror tool flips it, like a reflection in a mirror.

Next, the shape tools. There are six to remember. The Circle tool draws a circle, like a ball. The Rectangle tool draws a box, like a door. The Star tool draws a star, and you can choose its number of points. The Polygon tool draws a shape with straight sides, point by point. The Spline tool draws smooth curved outlines. The Draw tool lets you draw freehand, like with a pen.

Now the colour, text and helper tools. Six more to learn. The Fill tool fills a region with colour, like a paint bucket. The Gradient tool fills with two colours blending into each other, like a sunset sky. The Eyedropper tool picks up a colour from the canvas. The Text tool adds words. The Zoom tool makes the view bigger. The Bone tool adds bones to a character.

Synfig has a few more tools you should know by name. The Width tool makes parts of an outline thicker or thinner. The Cutout tool cuts a piece from an image. The Sketch tool lets you draw rough guide lines that are not part of the final video. The Brush tool paints with pixel brushes on a special layer.

Every tool has its own settings, shown in the Tool Options panel. For the Circle tool, you choose which layers to create, like a circle layer or an outline layer. You can also set the default colours and the brush size. Always check this panel before you draw.

Pause and predict. Which tool would you pick for each job? To turn a car wheel, you pick the Rotate tool. To paint the sky with blue fading into orange, you pick the Gradient tool. To copy the exact red of a flower already on the canvas, you pick the Eyedropper tool.
