Mobile commerce concepts, applications and comparison with e-commerce

Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Your phone can pay a bill, book a train seat and find the nearest hospital. What else can m-commerce do, and how is it different from e-commerce? Today we will learn the key concepts, the main applications, and a comparison table that exams ask often.

M-commerce stands on a few key ideas. Mobility means you can use services while you are moving, like on a bus. Reachability means a business can reach you at any time, for example with an alert or a message. Personalisation means the app shows offers that suit you, based on what you bought before. Localisation means services change with your location, like showing shops near you.

The first big application is mobile banking. You can check your balance and see a mini statement of recent transactions. You can send money to anyone instantly using UPI or IMPS. You can pay electricity, gas and water bills without standing in a queue. And the bank sends an SMS alert for every debit and credit, which helps you spot fraud early.

The next applications are ticketing and shopping. You can book train, bus, metro and movie tickets on your phone. The ticket often comes as a QR code or an SMS, so you do not need paper. Shopping apps save your address, so you can order and pay in one tap. You can also order food or groceries and get them within minutes in many cities.

Here are more applications that exams list. Location based services use GPS, like finding the nearest ATM. Mobile marketing sends offers to your phone, like a sale message from a shop. Information services give live updates, like the running status of your train. Entertainment services sell music, videos and games on the phone. Mobile auctions let you place a bid for an item from your phone.

M-commerce has clear advantages. It works anywhere and anytime, even while you are travelling. Payments are instant with UPI and QR codes. Apps give offers based on your location and your choices. Most importantly, it reaches people who own a phone but no computer, which is common in India.

It also has limitations. The small screen and keyboard make it hard to read details or compare products. It needs good network coverage and battery, which may fail in villages or on a journey. If your phone is lost or stolen without a screen lock, someone can misuse your data. There are also fake apps and fraud messages, so download apps only from the official store.

Now the comparison, a very common exam question. E-commerce is mostly done on a computer or laptop, while m-commerce uses a phone or tablet. E-commerce uses a wired connection or Wi-Fi, while m-commerce uses mobile data or Wi-Fi. E-commerce is usually done from a fixed place, but m-commerce works anywhere, even while moving. E-commerce has a large screen, and m-commerce has a small one. E-commerce rarely uses your location, but m-commerce often gives GPS based services. Finally, e-commerce is the wider term, and m-commerce is a part of it.
