Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. You watch a cricket match, a YouTube lesson and a railway display in the same day. What do all three have in common? They are all multimedia. Today we will learn what multimedia is and where it is used in real life.

First, a new term. Multi means many, and media means ways of giving information. Text is written words, like a news headline. Graphics are still pictures, like a photo or a chart. Audio is sound, like music or a voice. Video is moving pictures recorded with a camera. Animation is moving pictures made from drawings on a computer.

Multimedia can be used in two ways. Linear multimedia plays from start to end, and the viewer only watches. A film in a cinema hall is linear. Interactive multimedia lets the user control what comes next, by clicking or touching. A quiz app on your phone is interactive.

Why do we use so many media together? Pictures and sound catch attention faster than plain text. We remember a topic better when we see it and hear it. A short animation can explain a hard idea, like blood flow in the heart. And one message can reach people who cannot read well.

We will now see each application in turn, starting with education. Smart classes use projectors and videos to teach lessons. Online courses and video lessons, such as Kwickprep lessons, let you learn at home. E-learning apps use quizzes and animations to test and explain. Science simulations show experiments that are costly or unsafe in a school lab.

The second big area is entertainment. Films use special effects and animation. Video games mix graphics, sound and user control. Music and video apps stream songs and shows to your phone. Cartoon shows for children are made with animation software.

Third, business and advertising. Companies use slide presentations with charts and video in meetings. Advertisements on TV and social media use music and animation to catch our eye. Online shops show product photos and videos before we buy. Staff are trained with short training videos.

Fourth, medicine and science. Doctors study scans, like X-ray and MRI images, on a computer screen. Medical students learn surgery through 3D animation and videos. Scientists use simulations to show things we cannot see, like how a virus spreads. Doctors can also talk to patients in far villages through video calls, called telemedicine.

Fifth, engineering and design. Architects make a 3D walkthrough of a building before it is built. Engineers test a car or bridge design as a computer model. Fashion designers show new clothes on virtual models.

Sixth, public places and government services. Railway stations and airports use display boards with text and voice announcements. A kiosk is a touch screen machine in a public place, like a ticket machine at a metro station. Tourism websites show virtual tours of monuments. Government portals use videos to explain schemes to citizens.

Seventh, communication and new technology. Video conferencing lets people meet on screen from different cities. Social media mixes photos, videos and text in one place. Virtual reality, or VR, uses a headset to place you inside a computer made world. Augmented reality, or AR, adds computer pictures on top of the real world through a phone camera.

Pause and predict. Which area does each example belong to? A metro ticket machine is a kiosk, so it is public places. A doctor seeing a patient on a video call is medicine, called telemedicine. A 3D tour of a new flat before it is built is architecture.

Let us revise what we learned today. Multimedia joins text, graphics, audio, video and animation. It can be linear or interactive. Education and entertainment are its biggest uses. Business, medicine and engineering depend on it too. Public places use kiosks and displays, and VR and AR are the newest uses. In the exam, write each application with one clear example.
