Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Your friend offers you a free copy of a paid game. Is taking it smart, or is it wrong? Today we will learn the ethical use of computers and software.

Let us begin with a new word. Ethics means the moral rules that tell us what is right and what is wrong. Computer ethics means using computers, software and the internet in a right and responsible way. Something can be legal and still unfair to others, so always ask, is this fair to everyone?

Intellectual property means creations of the mind, like books, music, software and inventions. Intellectual property rights protect the creator. Copyright protects creative work, and in India, software is protected as a literary work under copyright law. A patent protects a new invention. A trademark protects a brand name or a logo.

A software licence is the set of rules for using a program. Proprietary software, like Microsoft Office, is owned by a company, and you usually pay to use it. Freeware is free to use, but the owner still keeps the rights. Shareware lets you try it free for some time, then you must pay. Open source software, like LibreOffice, gives you the source code, and you may study, change and share it.

Now the answer to our opening question. Software piracy means copying, sharing or using software without a valid licence. Downloading a cracked game or installing one licence on many computers are both piracy. It harms the developers who worked hard, and pirated copies often hide harmful programs. Piracy is illegal in India under the Copyright Act, so the free paid game is not smart.

Another common mistake in school work is plagiarism. Plagiarism means showing someone else's words, pictures or ideas as your own. Copy pasting a school project from a website, without saying where it came from, is plagiarism. The ethical way is to write in your own words and mention the source you used.

Every person has a right to privacy. Privacy means your right to decide who can see your personal data, like your phone number, address and photos. Never share OTPs or passwords, and never post someone's photo without asking them. Ethical apps and websites must ask for consent before collecting personal data. In India, the Digital Personal Data Protection Act of 2023 protects this data.

Next is spam. Spam means unwanted messages sent to a large number of people at the same time, by email, SMS or chat. Many spam messages are fake offers, like, you won a phone, click here. Do not click such links or reply, just mark them as spam and delete them. And ethically, never forward chain messages or send bulk advertisements yourself.

Malicious code, or malware, is software written to cause harm. A virus attaches itself to files and damages data when the file runs. A worm copies itself across networks on its own. A Trojan horse pretends to be a useful program, but does harm inside. Ransomware locks your files and demands money to unlock them. Spyware secretly collects your information. Writing or spreading any of these is unethical and a crime.

Hacking means breaking into a computer or an account without permission. Cybercrime is any crime done using a computer or the internet. Stealing data, online fraud and cyberbullying are all cybercrimes. In India, the Information Technology Act of 2000 deals with these crimes. You can report them at cybercrime dot gov dot in, or call the helpline number one nine three zero.

Being ethical also means protecting yourself and others. Use strong passwords, and do not use the same password everywhere. Keep your software updated, and use a trusted antivirus program. Download apps only from official app stores, never from unknown links. Always log out when you use a shared or school computer.

Pause and decide. Riya finds her friend's email still logged in on the lab computer, and reads her messages. The password was saved, so it was very easy. Is this ethical? No. Easy access is not permission, and reading another person's messages breaks their privacy. Riya should log the friend out and tell her.

Let us revise what we learned today. Computer ethics means using technology in a right and fair way. Respect copyright and software licences, and never use pirated software. Do not plagiarise, and always mention your sources. Protect privacy, ignore spam, and never create or spread malware. Hacking is a cybercrime, and you can report cybercrime at cybercrime dot gov dot in.
