The full lesson, in text

Hello students, welcome to Kwickprep. Today you can file income tax, download a mark sheet, or apply for a passport without visiting an office. How did government services reach our phones? Today we will learn e-governance: its meaning, types, examples from India, benefits and challenges.

Let us begin with the meaning. E-governance means using ICT to deliver government services and information. ICT, or information and communication technology, includes computers, the internet and mobile phones. E-governance connects the government with citizens, businesses, employees and other government offices. Its goal is to make government simple, fast and transparent.

E-governance is grouped into four types, based on who the government is dealing with. G2C means government to citizen, like applying for a certificate online. G2B means government to business, like a company filing GST returns. G2G means government to government, where departments share data with each other. G2E means government to employee, like salary slips and leave records for government staff.

India has many e-governance services. DigiLocker stores official documents like mark sheets and driving licences in digital form. The UMANG app brings many central and state services into one mobile app. Passport Seva lets citizens apply for a passport and book an appointment online. The income tax e-filing portal lets people file their tax returns from home. GeM, the Government e-Marketplace, is where government offices buy goods and services online.

Many of these services grew under a national programme. Digital India was launched by the Government of India in 2015. Its first aim is digital infrastructure, like internet access and a digital identity, for every citizen. Its second aim is to make government services available online, whenever people need them. Its third aim is digital literacy, so that every citizen can use these services confidently.

Not every citizen has a smartphone or internet at home. Common Services Centres are local shops run by trained operators. They help people who do not have a computer, internet or the skills to use them. At a centre, people can apply for certificates, pay bills and fill in government forms. These centres carry e-governance to villages and small towns.

Let us test what you learned. A company files its GST return on the government website. Which type of e-governance is this? It is G2B, government to business, because the government is dealing with a business.

E-governance brings clear benefits for citizens. Services are available twenty four hours a day, without visiting a government office. People save time, travel and money. They can track the status of their application online instead of asking again and again. Digital documents also mean less paperwork.

The government gains too. Transparency improves, which means rules, records and decisions are open for people to see. Corruption reduces because fewer middlemen stand between the citizen and the service. Departments that share data can make decisions faster. And through direct benefit transfer, money like scholarships and subsidies goes straight into the bank accounts of the people it is meant for.

E-governance also faces challenges. The digital divide is the gap between people who have devices and internet and people who do not. Some people, especially in remote areas, lack the skills to use online services. Government websites can face cyber attacks, and citizens can face online fraud. Personal data must be kept private and secure. India's many languages and weak networks in some areas add more difficulty.

Citizens must use these services safely. Use only official websites, which in India often end in .gov.in. Never share your OTP or password with anyone, even a caller claiming to be an officer. Be careful of fake messages that ask you to pay money for a government service. And keep your mobile number updated, because OTPs and updates are sent to it.

Let us revise what we learned today. E-governance means using ICT to deliver government services. Its four types are G2C, G2B, G2G and G2E. Indian examples include DigiLocker, UMANG, Passport Seva and GeM. Its benefits are services at any time, more transparency and less corruption. Its challenges are the digital divide, cyber security and privacy.
